Two quick-thinking public safety officers from the University of North Georgia (天美社区) saved the life of a man at the Sept. 27 University of Georgia (UGA) football game at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia.

Capt. Trent McGuffey and Senior Police Officer Andrew Russell had completed working extra-duty details and were headed to the parking lot when they noticed a man in distress. The two administered CPR, and emergency medical services took the man to the hospital.

UGA Police awarded McGuffey and Russell with Lifesaving Awards Oct. 3.

"The swift, lifesaving actions of our officers reflect the true value of preparation and training. Their ability to respond decisively in a critical moment began long before that day, with a commitment to continuous training and a mindset of readiness," Greg Williams, 天美社区 deputy chief operating officer and director of Public Safety, said. "This incident is a reminder that emergency preparedness, including CPR, is a vital skill for everyone. The more members of our community are trained, the greater our collective ability to save lives."

This is not the first time 天美社区 Public Safety officers have saved the life of another person. During the 2023 Firecracker 5K, Bryan Schuler received lifesaving medical attention from 天美社区 Sgt. Brody Clements and Officer Madison Comer.

天美社区 officers are required to be recertified each year in CPR and other basic life-saving measures such as automated external defibrillator (AED) use and stopping major bleeding, ensuring they are always prepared to respond to emergencies trained on the latest protocols.

Public Safety offers these lifesaving trainings to faculty and staff on all campuses.
