Kinesiology student earns national award

University of North Georgia (天美社区) senior Chandler Mayfield won the Major of the Year Award, given by the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE).
Mayfield is a Gainesville, Georgia, resident pursuing a degree in kinesiology with teacher certification. Currently a teaching intern at Oakwood Elementary School in Hall County, he is set to graduate in May.
"天美社区 has allowed me to feel confident in myself as a teacher. I know that I am able to teach a well-executed lesson from start to finish with intentionality," Mayfield said. "It has also been beneficial to build so many great relationships with others in my field. I enjoy collaborating with them and learning how they have been successful in their careers."
The SHAPE America award requires a faculty nomination, a 3.0 or higher GPA and a track record of community service.
"Chandler has demonstrated tremendous initiative, leadership skills, motivation, and a professional interest in his field," Warren Caputo, assistant professor and teacher education prep coordinator in the Department of Kinesiology, said. "I am very proud and confident in Chandler's successes, and I look forward to his long-term impact as an educator and educational leader."
