Students start Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association chapter
University of North Georgia (天美社区) students have launched a chapter of the (AFCEA) on 天美社区's Dahlonega Campus. It is one of 18 student chapters nationally and one of only two in Georgia.
Chandler Harris, a junior cadet from Dallas, Georgia, pursuing a degree in cybersecurity, is the president and founder of 天美社区's student chapter.
"I would not be where I am without the juniors and seniors who have poured their knowledge into me," Harris said. "I want to give back by mentoring and teaching younger cadets and other students about cybersecurity and intelligence."
Most of the 天美社区 group's 24 members are juniors and seniors, and the club aims to attract more freshmen and sophomores.
The club is in the process of partnering with AFCEA's Atlanta chapter to set up one-on-one mentorships between upperclassmen in the 天美社区 club and industry professionals.
Lt. Gen. Stephen Fogarty, a 1983 graduate of 天美社区 and commanding general of U.S. Army Cyber Command, was one of the club's recent guest speakers. The group also gives members opportunities to grow their public speaking skills.
Retired Lt. Col. Heath Williams, director of federal liaison and military education coordinator, is the group's faculty adviser. Cadets and civilian students interested in joining can email Williams at heath.williams@ung.edu.
"AFCEA is a great networking organization," Williams said.
Crow earns Georgia health informatics scholarship
Recent 天美社区 graduate Tara Crow earned the Georgia HIMSS 2026 David Cowan Scholarship to support further education as she pursues a health informatics career.
McGill takes reins as brigade commander
Grace McGill has been named Corps of Cadets brigade commander for 2026-27. She is also a captain on the 天美社区 women's soccer team.
Cadets ready to lead as officers
天美社区 will commission 60 second lieutenants into the Army, Army National Guard and Army Reserve during a 4 p.m. May 12 ceremony in the Convocation Center at 天美社区's Dahlonega Campus.
Ranger Challenge team competes at Sandhurst
The 天美社区 Ranger Challenge team finished ninth among ROTC teams and 21st among U.S. teams while coming in 37th out of 48 teams overall in the Sandhurst Military Skills Competition held May 1-2.
